About us

Northumberland Hospital Radio is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. Although NHR is an independent registered charity, it is also part of the voluntary services provision of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Our volunteers are very proud to be part of the Northumbria Family of Staff and Volunteers with one of the UK’s consistently top-performing, progressive, NHS Trusts.

NHR broadcasts 24 hours a day using a computer-based playout system to provide patients and staff with a quality blend of easy listening music, mixed with information and presenter-introduced programmes.

Hear us at Alnwick, Berwick, Blyth, Haltwhistle, Hexham, NSECH, North Tyneside and Wansbeck General Hospitals via the bedside entertainment system provided by Spark TSL (currently being rolled out across the Trust).

Patients and Staff can also hear NHR via the Listen Now button on their own devices.

Patients on hospital wards can access NHR via the Media Button, on the new bedside entertainment system, then choose Radio – NHR will be the first channel that appears.

Patients and staff can listen at any Northumbria site using their own devices using the link on our home page.

If you’d like to listen to NHR at home – ask your smart speaker to “play Northumberland Hospital Radio” (works with Amazon Echo/Alexa) and enjoy having the Station on in the background during your day!

Listening to NHR at Northumbria Healthcare Hospitals is completely free of charge. There may be a small charge for a headset – which is yours to keep – the purchase of which supports the work of the Trust’s Bright Charity.

NHR – 100% voluntary – serving the NHS from the Tyne to the Tweed

How to Listen

If you are an in-patient at any Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Hospital, you can listen to NHR – free of charge – on the bedside entertainment system, provided by Spark TSL.

If you are waiting for an appointment, or you are a Member of Staff, you can tune in on your own device using the Listen Now button.

Event mentions

NHR provides a “What’s On” service, which is broadcast to the patients and staff. It provides information about local non-profit making, non-political and non-religious events.  We particularly welcome information about health and wellbeing services and events from bona fide organisations.

Donations and Sponsorship

NHR is a UK Registered Charity, registered with HMRC for Gift Aid. All donations, whatever the amount, are most welcome and will be properly used to support and develop the Charity’s service. Please donate below – thank you!

Sponsorship enquiries are welcome from health and wellbeing organisations and appropriate UK Companies, subject to approval by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
